First it is important to state up front that the Lord is the source of power, there is no “magic” in the oils. The fact that these oils are created at the direction of the Holy Spirit is what makes them anointed – because they were created in obedience.

They also have to be used in obedience to His prompting. And when that happens – when they are both created in obedience and used in obedience – that is where you will experience impact. The Lord moves.

With that preface, here are some anointing oil uses:

  • Prayer for healing
  • Consecration
  • Preparation for battle
  • To honor someone or as an act of hospitality
  • Daily use
  • Preparation
  • Blessing, protection, and covering

More on each use is found below. We’ll also add links as we hear about how others use oils.

Prayer for healing

Biblical Context: Prayer for healing is one of the most commonly known and accepted uses of anointing oils. James 5:14 says “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” It’s mentioned again in Mark 6:13 which says “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”

Practical Application: Anoint those that need healing

Suggested Oils:

Consecration

Biblical Context: Another familiar use of anointing oil is consecration (i.e. dedication). In this case and object or person might be set apart for God – consecrated. For example, the anointing of the tabernacle in the Old Testament (Exodus 30:26) or the anointing of priests and kings (Exodus 29:29 and 1 Samuel 16:13).

Practical Application: Some uses you might consider would be anointing your home, family – even objects. For example, worship scarves created by Dyed4you.com are prayed over and anointed – they are dedicated to the Lord

Suggested Oils:

Preparation for battle

Biblical Context: Isaiah 21:5 says “…anoint the shield.” Oil is part of preparing for battle.

Practical Application: If you are preparing for or engaged in spiritual battle

Suggested Oils:

To honor someone or as an act of hospitality

Biblical Context: Luke 7:38 is the familiar story of the woman washing and anointing Jesus’ feet. “And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.”

Practical Application: To honor someone, as an act of hospitality

Suggested Oils:

Daily use

Biblical Context: Ruth 3:3 “Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.”

Practical Application: Daily application as the Lord leads

Suggested Oils: Any oil at the direction of the Holy Spirit; or one of the perfume oils

Preparation

Biblical Context: Esther 2:12 “Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;).”

Practical Application: Oils can be used during a season of preparation – they are often a wonderful, tangible reminder of the promises of God

Suggested Oils:

Blessing, protection, and covering

Biblical Context: In the 23rd Psalm, it speaks of our Shepherd, how He “…preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”

Practical Application: As a reminder of God’s promise to bless us, protect us, and cover us
